10 Fontanella Zinfandel ($36) ☺☺☺☺

The Thanksgiving wines this year were headed up by a classic American Zinfandel from Jeff and Karen Fontanella, one of our favourite Zin artists in the region. The wine was opened and decanted about an hour before drinking and the time spent breathing brought out the best in this feast of flavours. The wine complimented the roast turkey perfectly. The nose was predominantly blackberry with a  hint of maraschino cherry, slightly smoky and with the usual white pepper found in all great Zinfandels. The taste was round, full and the finish long. The dark fruit being balanced with a hint of spicy vanilla all melding into a great thanksgiving wine. One to grace any table.

09 Amavi Walla Walla Cabernet Sauvignon ($29) ☺☺

An acceptable Cabernet which is better with food as opposed to a  stand alone drinking wine. Black cherries abound with hints of cocoa and vanilla. The tannins are firm which can tend to be overpowering but we found this wine was best drunk directly after pouring.

08 Alderbrook Carignane ($22) ☺☺☺

Its not often you find a blending grape which performs well on its own. Most blending grapes have particular flavours the winemaker needs to develop his style. Int his case the Carignane produced from a small vineyard in Dry creek produces a perfectly acceptable wine and at a great price. The Carignane has a deep purple colour and in the glass has a nose of deep plums, cherries and mocha/chocolate. When you taste this wine it has solid tannins but the fruit is strong enough to take this and makes it a great food wine. This wine would be really good with a  strong flavoured meat such a lamb.  It is available cheaper through the wine club but represents excellent value.

09 Maroon Spring Mountain Cabernet ($60) ☺☺☺

A deep ruby coloured Cabernet which benefits from decanting before drinking. We waited about an hour before tasting and the initial nose was of plums and dark berry style fruit. The taste was plums and prunes with chocolate undertones all wrapped up in firm tannins and good balance. I think this will be better next year but can easily be enjoyed food, a nice lamb chop would be a great choice ! This wine is on offer right now and can be bought nearer $30 which makes it great value as opposed to the $60 initial price point.
